Hitachi Error Code 04, A Fault Inside the Outdoor Unit

Hitachi error code 04 tells you that two circuit boards inside the outdoor unit have stopped talking to each other, so the compressor cannot run safely.

Your wall controller shows ALARM, the run light flickers and the screen keeps swapping between a unit number and the digits 04. Hitachi error code 04 is less common than a drain or pressure alarm. Still, it has a clear meaning, and knowing that meaning helps you avoid wasted resets.

Put simply, this code is about a conversation that has broken down. The outdoor unit holds more than one control board, and those boards must swap data all the time. When that data stops, the system shuts the compressor down to protect it.

What does Hitachi error code 04 mean?

Hitachi error code 04 means abnormal transmission between the inverter PCB and the outdoor control PCB. PCB stands for printed circuit board. Both boards live inside the outdoor unit, so this fault sits outside your home, not in the ceiling or the wall.

The outdoor control board acts like a manager. It reads sensors, follows the request from the indoor unit and decides how hard the compressor should work. The inverter board then does the heavy lifting, because it turns mains power into the varying power that drives the compressor motor.

For that to work, the manager must send orders and the inverter must report back. If the reports stop arriving, or arrive in a garbled state, the control board cannot trust what is happening. So it raises code 04 and stops the compressor.

Why this is not the same as code 03

Owners often mix up code 04 with code 03. Both codes describe a link that has failed, yet the links are in different places. Code 03 covers the cable between the indoor and outdoor units, while code 04 covers a link that stays entirely within the outdoor cabinet. If you want to compare the two, our page on Hitachi error code 03 explains the indoor to outdoor link.

Where do you see code 04?

Most owners notice code 04 on a wired wall controller. That type of controller comes with many Hitachi ducted systems, ceiling cassettes, Utopia commercial splits and Set Free VRF systems. The controller shows ALARM, and the unit number and the code take turns on the screen.

A technician can also read the same code at the outdoor unit. The outdoor control board has a small seven segment display, and it shows the active alarm there too. That second display is handy, because it confirms the fault without relying on the wall controller.

What about wall split systems?

Many wall splits do not show two digit codes at all. Instead, they blink the timer lamp a set number of times. Four blinks on many models points to an outdoor fault, which can cover a range of problems inside the outdoor unit. Blink patterns vary between models, so always check the owner manual for your exact unit.

How do the two outdoor boards work together?

It helps to picture the outdoor unit as a small factory. Power comes in from your switchboard, and the control board decides what the day looks like. Then it passes instructions to the inverter board by a short cable and a plug.

The inverter board changes the speed of the compressor to match the load. On a mild day, it may run slowly and quietly. On a very hot or cold day, it runs faster to keep up. Because the speed keeps changing, the two boards talk constantly while the system runs.

What happens when the talk stops

If the inverter board goes quiet, the control board cannot tell how fast the compressor turns. It also cannot see the current flowing or the board temperature. Running blind could harm the compressor, so the system stops instead. That is why code 04 often appears with no other warning at all.

What usually causes Hitachi error code 04?

The cause is almost always electrical, and it nearly always sits inside the outdoor unit. Some causes are small, such as a plug that has worked loose. Others mean a board needs replacing. Here are the usual suspects a technician will look at.

A loose or corroded plug between the boards

A short cable joins the two boards, and plugs at each end hold it in place. Years of heat, cold and vibration can loosen those plugs a little. In coastal areas, salt air can also coat the pins and weaken the contact. Either way, the signal may drop out from time to time.

A damaged signal cable

Rodents and insects sometimes move into outdoor units, especially in cooler months. They can chew or soil the small cables inside. A cable that has rubbed against a sharp metal edge can also wear through. When that happens, the boards lose their link.

No power reaching the inverter board

The inverter board needs its own supply to run. If a fuse on that supply blows, or a power connection fails, the board stays dark. The control board then hears nothing back, and it reports code 04. In some cases, a power surge in a storm is what blew the fuse.

A failed inverter board

Inverter boards handle a lot of power, and they get warm while they work. Over time, parts on the board can fail. When the board cannot start up or cannot send data, the result is the same code. This is one of the more common outcomes once simple causes are ruled out.

A failed outdoor control board

Less often, the fault sits on the control board instead. Its side of the link may stop working while the rest of the board seems fine. A technician tests both sides of the link before deciding which board is at fault.

Water or dust inside the cabinet

Wind driven rain can enter an outdoor unit, especially if the cover is damaged or missing. Fine dust in inland and rural areas can also build up on boards. Both can cause tracking, corrosion or short faults that upset the signal.

Which checks are safe for an owner?

Inside the outdoor unit, the parts carry high voltage. Some parts on the inverter board can also hold a charge after the power is off. For those reasons, owner checks stay outside the cabinet. They are still worth doing before you book a visit.

  1. Note the detailsWrite down the code, the unit number and what the system was doing when it stopped.
  2. Turn the system offStop the system at the wall controller so it does not try to restart again and again.
  3. Switch off the powerTurn off the air conditioner circuit at your switchboard, and the outdoor isolator if you have one and can reach it safely.
  4. Wait a few minutesLeave the power off for several minutes, so the boards can fully power down.
  5. Restore power and test onceTurn the power back on, start the system and see if code 04 returns.
  6. Look around the outdoor unitWithout opening it, check for storm damage, a missing cover, pest signs or water pooling near the base.

If the system runs normally after one power cycle, the fault may have been a one off glitch. Even so, keep the note you made. If code 04 comes back in the next few days, that note will help the technician find a pattern. Our page on what to do when a reset will not clear a code covers that situation in more detail.

Never remove the outdoor unit cover to look at the boards. The inverter board can hold a dangerous charge for some time after you cut the power, and touching it can cause serious injury.

How does a technician find the fault?

A technician starts with what the system already knows. They read the code on the outdoor seven segment display and check whether other codes appear too. Then they isolate the power and wait for the inverter board to discharge before they open anything.

Next, they look closely at the plugs and the cable between the boards. They check for burn marks, green corrosion, chewed insulation and loose pins. If they find a poor connection, they clean or reseat it and test the system again.

Testing the power feed

When the plugs look fine, the technician tests the supply to the inverter board. They check fuses, terminals and the incoming voltage with a meter. Because code 04 can follow a supply problem, they may also look for signs of an unstable mains supply. In that case, Hitachi error code 06 can sometimes appear in the history as well.

Deciding which board has failed

If power arrives but the link stays silent, the technician must decide which board is faulty. They may watch indicator lights on each board or test signals at the plugs. Then they recommend a repair based on what they find, and they explain the reasons for it. Our Hitachi PCB repair page explains how board work usually goes.

Checking the work

After a repair, the technician runs the system and watches it closely. They want the compressor to ramp up and down smoothly, with no fresh alarm. They may also run both cooling and heating, because some faults only show in one mode.

Does code 04 involve refrigerant work?

Code 04 itself is an electrical fault, not a gas leak. In most cases, the repair does not touch the refrigerant at all. That said, a board fault can sometimes hide a second problem. For example, a compressor that draws too much current can stress the inverter board and lead to repeat failures.

If the technician needs to open the refrigerant circuit, the work must follow Australian rules. Only a person with the right licence can handle refrigerant, and you can check licence details through the Australian Refrigeration Council. Most current Hitachi models use R32 or R410A, and both need proper handling.

When does code 04 tend to show up?

Faults like this often follow a pattern. Spotting the pattern can save time on the visit. Here are a few common situations, and what each one may suggest.

After a storm or a power cut

A storm can send a surge down the power lines. Surges can blow fuses or damage sensitive parts on the inverter board. If code 04 appears the morning after a big storm, tell the technician about the weather.

In very hot weather

Inverter boards work harder when the compressor runs flat out. So a board that is close to failing may only drop out on the hottest afternoons. If the code mostly appears in heatwaves, that clue points toward a heat sensitive part.

Now and then for no clear reason

An intermittent code 04 often points to a loose plug or a cracked solder joint. These faults come and go with heat and vibration. They can be tricky to catch, so a log of dates and times really helps.

After work near the outdoor unit

Builders, painters and gardeners sometimes knock or move outdoor units. A strong knock can loosen plugs inside. Likewise, a pressure washer aimed at the unit can drive water into the cabinet.

What are the risks of ignoring code 04?

The system will not cool or heat while code 04 is active, so you will notice it quickly. The bigger risk comes from repeated resets. Each restart forces the boards to try again with a link that may be failing.

  • A loose plug can arc and burn, which turns a small fix into a board replacement.
  • Water inside the cabinet can spread corrosion to other parts over time.
  • A failing board can stress the compressor if it keeps trying to start.
  • Pests left inside the unit can damage more cables and wiring.

So one or two careful resets are fine, but a pattern of resets is a sign to stop. Leave the system off and arrange a proper inspection instead.

How can you lower the chance of code 04?

You cannot fully prevent board faults, because electronics wear out. However, a few habits reduce the risk and catch problems early. Most of them focus on keeping the outdoor unit clean, dry and well protected.

  • Keep the area around the outdoor unit clear of leaves, mulch and stored items.
  • Check that the outdoor unit cover and side panels are in place after any building work.
  • Avoid pointing hoses or pressure washers at the outdoor cabinet.
  • Fix pest problems near the house, since outdoor units offer warm shelter.
  • Book regular servicing, so a technician can look inside and spot loose plugs or corrosion.

Coastal homes benefit from extra care. Salt air speeds up corrosion on pins and terminals. In addition, a technician can check the condition of the boards during a routine service, which helps you plan ahead.

Protecting against surges

Some owners ask about surge protection. A licensed electrician can advise on surge protection for your switchboard. While no device stops every surge, good protection can reduce the damage a storm does to sensitive boards.

What should you tell the technician?

A few details make the visit faster. Have them ready when you call, and again when the technician arrives. Here is a short list that covers the essentials.

  • The full code, plus the unit number that shows next to it.
  • Whether the code appeared once or keeps coming back.
  • Any storms, power cuts or building work just before the fault.
  • The model details from the label on the side of the outdoor unit.
  • Whether you have one indoor unit or several on the same system.

With this information, the technician can arrive with a plan. They can also judge whether they may need a replacement board, which helps avoid a second trip.

How does code 04 fit with other Hitachi codes?

This code belongs to a family of codes about power and data inside the system. Code 03 covers the indoor to outdoor link, while code 05 covers the phase signal of the power supply. Code 06 then covers inverter voltage that is too low or too high.

Because these codes relate to each other, one fault can sometimes trigger another. A technician looks at the full alarm history, not just the latest code. If you want to see the whole range, the Hitachi error code list shows every code we cover.

The main points about code 04

Hitachi error code 04 means the inverter board and the outdoor control board have lost their link. The fault sits inside the outdoor unit, and the system stops the compressor to keep it safe. Common causes include loose plugs, damaged cables, a blown fuse and a failed board.

Owners can safely note the details, cycle the power once and look around the outside of the unit. Beyond that, the work belongs to a trained technician, because the boards carry high voltage. When code 04 keeps returning, book a visit so a technician can test the link and fix it properly.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hitachi error code 04 serious?

It stops the system, so it is serious in the sense that you lose cooling or heating. However, it is often an electrical fault that a technician can trace and repair. The key is not to keep forcing restarts while the cause remains.

Is code 04 the indoor unit or the outdoor unit?

Code 04 relates to the outdoor unit. It describes a broken link between two boards inside the outdoor cabinet. The indoor unit and the wall controller simply report the fault.

Can a power outage cause code 04?

Yes, it can. A sudden outage or surge can upset the boards, and a power cycle may clear it. If a surge blew a fuse or damaged a board, though, the code will keep coming back.

Will turning the power off and on fix code 04?

Sometimes it will, especially after a short glitch. Turn the power off for several minutes, then restore it and test once. If the code returns, leave the system off and book a technician.

Does code 04 mean I need a new air conditioner?

Not usually. Most cases end with a plug repair, a fuse or a replacement board. A technician can tell you whether a repair makes sense for your system once they have tested it.

Can I open the outdoor unit to check the plugs?

Please do not. The inverter board can store a dangerous charge even after you turn off the power. Leave all checks inside the cabinet to a trained technician.

Why does code 04 only appear on hot days?

Hot weather makes the inverter board work harder and run warmer. A weak part or a loose joint may fail only under that extra load. Tell the technician about the pattern, as it is a useful clue.

Can pests cause Hitachi error code 04?

Yes, they can. Rodents and insects sometimes nest in outdoor units and damage small cables. A technician can clear the nest, repair the cable and suggest ways to keep pests out.
